Google My Business (GMB) launches an update which limits business owners’ ability to select service areas of the business as a certain distance of radius around the business. In simpler terms, you can no longer set your service area as a distance around your business.
Service-area businesses currently based on a distance will be automatically converted to the closest named areas, like San Francisco, CA or Islington, London.
Business owners will be able to review these updates in their Google My Business account under Google updates, and can either accept or provide a new service area. They’ll also receive an email notification about the change.
What does it mean to businesses?
Not a big concern, rather an opportunity over a long period. It will not give your Google My Business listing an immediate boost in the search rankings. But over a period, it will improve the discoverability of your business in the areas you serve.
If you had previously entered a distance around your business, you won’t be able to edit it going forward. However, you’ll need to specify your service area by city, postal code, or other areas.
